Common Teen Bra Care Mistakes

It’s common for young girls and teens to make bra-care mistakes when they first start wearing and caring for them. Some common blunders include improper washing, incorrect storage, or misuse.

By teaching her to take care of her undergarments and the importance of bra hygiene, your daughter can extend the lifespan of her bras and ensure they continue to support her growing body comfortably. It’s crucial to notice poor habits early on so you can help your daughter change her ways and keep herteen brasin the best shape.

Let’s take a look at the usual teen bra care mistakes and break down how to do them right!

Not Washing Bras Separately

Bras are called ‘delicates’ for a reason–their materials require gentle care. Otherwise, they can get damaged easily, which is why it’s typically best if you wash them by hand.

That said, we know It’s always easier to throw dirty clothes in the washing machine. If you do, you must wash them separately from regular clothes or with other intimates or light clothing. Remember to secure them in a mesh laundry bag and only wash them on a gentle cycle with cold water.

Cleaning Bras Too Often

It can be tempting to wash bras after every use if you’re unfamiliar with how often teen bras should be washed. If your daughter gets sweaty or dirty when she wears them, you want to wash them more frequently. However, with regular wear, teen bras can be worn several times before they need to be cleaned.

Don’t wash them too often; this could stretch or wear out the fabric. If taken care of properly, teen bras should stand up to two or three years of washing.

Using Strong Detergent

Many people make the mistake of using strong detergent to wash bras, thinking that it’s the best way to keep them clean. Mild detergent is the better choice to protect the delicate materials of the undergarment and avoid irritating your daughter’s skin with harsh chemicals.

Putting Bras in the Dryer

Don’t put bras in the clothes dryer. The high heat can disfigure your daughter’s intimates, causing them to crease, shrink, or stretch. If you must dry them in a machine, set it to the lowest heat setting possible. Otherwise, stick to airdrying.

Rubbing or Squeezing Bras to Dry

Before airdrying bras, you might make the mistake of rubbing or squeezing them to get excess water out of the material. Doing this will ruin the cup shape and may cause creasing. If you want to remove excess water, wrap the bras in a towel and gently pat them dry before hanging them out.

Hanging Bras by the Cups or Straps

When hanging bras out to dry, be sure to hang them by the center band. Hanging by the cups or straps may distort them.

Folding Bra Cups

Folding bra cups might save space in the dresser, but they can ruin the shape of a bra and make it unwearable. Before you put away your daughter’s intimates, smooth them back into their original shape.

The best way to store padded or molded bras is to stack them with the cups supporting each other. You can simply fold non-padded bras in the middle and place them on top of one another.

Getting the Right-Sized Bra Each Time

Your daughter’s bra size can fluctuate as her body grows and changes. It's good to re-measure her body to ensure you purchase the correct size whenever you buy her a new pair (which may be about every six months, depending on her age and how fast she is growing). Wearing bras that are too loose or tight will strain certain parts of the garment, reducing their longevity.
